THE 3 MOST IMPORTANT THINGS THAT YOU NEED TO DO TO PREPARE FOR CHRISTMAS 2020

With the pandemic being here to stay at least beyond Christmas, many industry experts are predicting an upturn in online shopping, and indeed logistics manager is already reporting a 50% upturn in e-commerce volumes compared to a year ago. But what does this mean for you in your company?

It means that you need to start thinking now about what you might need to fulfil your demand as much as three months from now. This is because as the e-commerce trade increases, so will demand for e-commerce and postal packing materials. This means that with more businesses wanting more supplies, lead times are likely to increase and supply will struggle to keep up with demand. So, let’s take a look at the 3 things that you need to do to make sure you don’t run out of supplies…

THE 3 MOST IMPORTANT THINGS THAT YOU NEED TO DO TO PREPARE FOR CHRISTMAS 2020

1: YOU NEED TO PREDICT DEMAND

Not everyone reading this will be affected by this pandemic in the same way, but everyone has been affected in some way. With many companies having reduced their staff levels, it has become especially important to makes sure you can accurately predict the demands of your customers for the upcoming peak season, and to ensure that you are able to meet these demands in terms of labour, supplies and even packaging materials, because they are easy to forget about that!

2: DO YOU HAVE ENOUGH MATERIALS?

Having sufficient levels of packaging materials may be a commonly overlooked requirement, but it has the power to close down your despatch department and negate your sales for what could be an otherwise very good season. This is especially potent at the current time when many companies have reduced their operations and despatch staff, which sometimes includes the people who are responsible for ensuring that these very supplies are always available. And that’s not where it finishes…

3: KEEP A CLOSE EYE ON STOCK LEVELS

Unprecedented and unpredictable events are just that: they’ve never happened before and are very difficult to plan for. Just because you’ve ordered enough stock to last you maybe 3 months (if you’re feeling brave) it doesn’t mean that you won’t run out; far from it. Freak runs of specific products can run you out of some materials, whilst others remain unaffected. And to add to the fun, manufactures and mills are now requiring Q4 usage predictions by the end of this month, with some even closing their order books in mid-November! This is likely to impede stock availability and lead times, so if you run out of stock before re-ordering there may be a significant gap before your next stock arrives.
