The 5 Key Points to consider when designing your warehouse

The Pentagon Process is an efficient model that allows Warehouse Managers and Team Leaders to align their team as closely as possible with the ideal efficiency for their operations. It highlights the five most important areas of the dispatch process, which are usually the most straightforward areas to improve to yield large productivity gains.

By looking at the points on the image above, and the suggestions listed below, hopefully, you will begin to ask yourself questions around your system, and feel assisted in finding improvements that will drive your productivity. If you feel you need help, call us on 01733 233 322 to arrange an assessment. Our initial consultations are free!

IS YOUR STORAGE ORGANISED SUFFICIENTLY?

Analyse your products, and place your fast-moving lines nearest to the packing benches. This allows your most common picking routes to be reduced, therefore saving time. It also helps to have your picking stock on the lower shelves, with the storage stock on the higher shelves. This means that time is not lost when getting out and putting away access equipment for reaching the more upper shelves. By putting clear labels and barcodes on your stock, it reduces mistakes and helps prevent confusion.

WILL YOUR PICKING BE EFFECTIVE?

Picking trolleys are often one of the most overlooked tools in the Warehouse and can be highly effective when designed correctly. Product Orientated carts are designed with the products and Average Order Sizes in mind, therefore ensuring that the trolleys will function correctly, and make the best use of size and space. A good design can also incorporate user-friendly and ergonomic functions, such as fold-out step ladders and comfortable handles.

IS YOUR PACKING PROCEDURE STREAMLINED?

When is a desk not a desk? When it’s a FASTDesk! A bench that Follows FAST and TEMS Methodology is much more likely to make a positive contribution towards warehouse efficiency. This is because it allows the packer to remain at their desk for prolonged periods of time, which therefore minimises downtime. Another way to reduce downtime is to facilitate rolling A/D, which allows both pickers and packers to remain in constant activity.

HOW WILL YOUR PARCEL PROCESSING INTEGRATE WITH YOUR SYSTEM?

The processing stage is all about stock control. Therefore, it can be bolted right next to the packing stage, or segregated further down the line, and the most effective position all depends on the volume of throughput and which Process Format you currently use. Incorporating WMS will also allow you to accurately and effectively manage stock status and locations.

COULD DESPATCH RESTRICT YOUR SPEED AND FLUID MOVEMENTS?

Despatch operations work best when the parcels are effectively segregated. This can be done with Human Workers, but there are numerous methods to make their lives easier, if not bypass them altogether, such as Roboeyes and Auto-Segregation.

Agile Workstations have done an amazing job in our Warehouse. They have identified a way that we can use the maximum amount of space with a cost effective and easy solution meaning that we now have at least twice the usable space that we previously had.

The whole job was completed in one day with minimal disruption throughout and the project was straight forward from the initial plans to completion. Agile Workspace Solutions handled everything for us and were even there to help move stock and boxes afterwards which saved us some time!

We are very happy with the work carried out and will continue working with Agile Workspace Solutions and Eastpac over the coming years to help us with our expansion.
